Protect Your Home: Common Termite Entry Points You Might Be Overlooking

A well-maintained concrete slab or foundation is crucial to a home’s structure. Unfortunately, over time, concrete can crack or suffer damage due to settling or external forces like tree roots. These cracks can serve as hidden entry points for termites. Once termites find a small gap, they can quickly spread within the walls, timber framing, or even underfloor areas.

Prevention Tip:

  • Regularly inspect your concrete slabs and foundations for cracks.
  • Seal small cracks promptly and have larger gaps professionally repaired.
  • If cracking is observed, have a licensed pest control company assess and install a chemical barrier around the perimeter of your property.

Timber Decks in Direct Contact with Ground Soil

Timber decks are a popular addition to Gold Coast homes, providing a great outdoor living space. However, if these decks are constructed in direct contact with the ground or soil, they can become a conduit for termites. In many cases, timber decks are built against external walls, creating a “bridge” for termites to travel from the soil to the structure of your home.

Prevention Tip:

  • Ensure timber decks are raised off the ground using steel stirrups to support framing timbers.
  • Maintain adequate ventilation under the deck.
  • Create a barrier or gap between the timber and external walls or cladding.
  • Regularly inspect the underside of your deck for signs of termite activity or moisture build-up.

Overhanging Trees and Branches Touching External Walls

Termites are opportunistic pests and can also access your home through above-ground routes. Overhanging trees or branches that touch your home’s external walls or roof cladding can act as “bridges,” allowing termites to bypass traditional entry points altogether. This is especially concerning when trees are close to or leaning against the roofline.

Prevention Tip:

  • Trim back any overhanging branches that come into direct contact with your roof or walls.
  • Keep trees well-maintained to reduce the risk of termite movement from tree trunks to your home.

Drainage Issues and Rising Damp: A Silent Threat

Proper drainage around your home is essential in maintaining a dry, pest-free environment. When water does not drain effectively, it can cause rising damp — a condition that weakens structural elements and creates the perfect environment for termites to thrive.

Prevention Tip:

  • Ensure gutters and downpipes are functioning correctly and direct water away from the foundation.
  • Inspect for pooling water or poor runoff after rainfall.
  • Consider installing drainage solutions if you notice damp or moisture problems around the base of your home.
